Fiji's Western Division, home to Ba Province, is commonly known as 'Sunset Central' and for good reason. The west coast boasts magnificent sunsets which illuminate the clear turquoise waters and golden sandy beaches. The province itself is a dive into diversity, offering everything from coastal lowlands to towering hills and mountains.
No two landscapes in Ba Province are the same, and this variety extends to the terrain. A compact or economy class car will serve you just fine on the sealed roads in cities. But if you're up for some off-roading to hidden highland villages or remote beaches, a robust SUV is recommended.
The Queens Road and Kings Road are key routes that run along the coast, wrapping around Viti Levu, Fiji's largest island. The speed limit in cities and towns is generally 50 km/h, and on open roads is 80 km/h. Fiji votes for right-hand drive, so keep to the left!
Fiji's traffic rules are not too dissimilar from those in many other countries. Remember to wear your seat belt at all times, and absolutely never drink and drive. Mobile usage while driving is also forbidden.
Ba's coastline is graced with several amazing beaches. Natadola Beach, one of Fiji's finest, is just an hour's drive away. Lautoka, known as the 'Sugar City', is Fiji’s second largest city and is buzzing with local markets, eateries and remarkably friendly locals.
The namesake town of the province, Ba Town, provides an authentic Fijian experience. Visit Govind Park, a football stadium that holds a special place in the hearts of the locals, or immerse yourself in the colourful sights and aromatic spices of Ba Municipal Market.
Ba Province enjoys a tropical marine climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year. Dry season from May to October is an ideal time to visit, offering clear skies and a cooler breeze.
Ba is host to Fiji's largest Hindu festival, the 'Fire Walking Festival' held at Draiba Haveli. This unique event usually takes place in July and offers a spectacular cultural insight into the island nation.
The Fijian Dollar (FJD) is the local currency. Major credit cards are widely accepted, but cash is recommended in remote areas and for local shopping markets.
In Ba Province, you'll discover more than just a destination, you'll find a way of life that is laid-back, genuine, and truly Fijian. So what are you waiting for? Grab those keys, hit the open roads and explore at your leisure!
