Cayenne – Félix Eboué Airport, known also as Rochambeau Airport, is the main hub in French Guiana. Located 13km southwest of Cayenne, the capital city, it's your gateway to this incredible unspoiled tropical heaven.
Ensuring you have the freedom to explore at your own pace, numerous rental car service desks are conveniently based at the airport. You can choose from several companies including Europcar, Hertz, and Avis.
The quickest route to the city is via Route de l'Aéroport and N1 which takes approximately 20 minutes. Make sure your GPS is set up or a road map is at your disposal to navigate through the journey smoothly.
Considering the landscapes and road conditions, a compact or economy car will be ideal for city explorations and short distances. If traveling as a family or planning for longer drives exploring natural reserves, an SUV or a minivan can offer extra comfort and space.
Don't get caught short on fuel, there are several gas stations near the airport. Total and Ecomax are approximately 10 minutes’ drive away, perfect for refilling before returning your rental car.
French Guiana enjoys a tropical climate, so pack your light clothing and rain gear. The official currency is Euro (€). ATMs are readily available at the airport and major cities for cash withdrawals.
Once you’ve explored Cayenne’s vibrant markets and colonial architecture, get behind the wheel and drive to surrounding cities. Kourou, home of the Guiana Space Centre, is a must-visit. Enjoy the scenic drive to Saint Laurent du Maroni, known for its historical prison and multicultural atmosphere.
French is the official language here, though English is understood at tourist locations.
Do remember to drive on the right side of the road. Plan your journey as per your flight schedule as the rental stations working hours are variable.
We wish you a memorable journey exploring French Guiana. Ready, set, adventure!
