On the offshore island of Lopud and in the suburb of Ploèe there are ruins of the military hospitals, here called Lazareti, where, for the first time in Europe, travellers arriving in 1377 had to stay in quarantine for 30 days, later on for 40 days in isolation, as a preventive protection against the plague. The world's oldest arboretum, Arboretum Trsteno, which was built around 1492, is located near the city of Dubrovnik. The Lovrijenac fortress is located west of the old town on a 37-meter-high rock. The inscription on the fortress "Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro" means in English "Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world". It was first mentioned in an official document in 1301. The island of Lokrum was first mentioned in 1023 as the site of an abbey and a Benedictine monastery. In 1839 the island was bought by Archduke Maximilian of Austria and a summer house was built. The plants in the garden come mainly from Australia and South America.
