Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport is the largest airport in Mauritania and the hub for all international flights to this fascinating country. Located approximately 25km north of the capital city, Nouakchott, the airport is modern, spacious, and well-equipped to handle the increasing number of travellers exploring this part of the world. It is served by a number of international and local airlines, connecting Mauritania with several major cities around the globe.
For the convenience of holidaymakers and business travellers alike, several car rental companies operate within the airport. These include well-known names like Avis, Europcar and local providers, offering you a broad spectrum of choices. We recommend booking your rental car online in advance to secure the best deals and ensure your chosen vehicle is ready and waiting for you upon your arrival.
Driving in Mauritania is an adventure in itself. The roads range from well-paved highways in the city to Rubble tracks in the desert. It’s advisable to rent a 4WD for outside of the city excursions. Remember, driving is on the right-hand side of the road here.
Gas stations are not as numerous as you might be used to, especially on the outskirts of the cities and in remote areas. We recommend filling up the tank whenever you're in town. As for connectivity, GPS works fine in the cities, but a physical map could be your best bet when venturing into more remote regions.
Mauritania is situated in the Saharan region, which means a dry, hot climate throughout the year. The Mauritanian ouguiya (MRO) is the national currency. Credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and restaurants but having cash on hand is helpful, especially when traveling outside of major cities.
With your rental car, you’re free to roam and there is much to see! Take a leisurely drive along the coast to the thriving port city of Nouadhibou or head into the heart of the country to experience life in the desert towns of Atar and Chinguetti.
You’re all set, it’s time to start your journey from Nouakchott-Oumtounsy Airport. Remember, the best way to travel is at your own pace. And what better way to do this than in the comfort of your own rental car? Happy driving!
