Known as RAF Gibraltar, Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) is the only airport in the Gibraltar area. Despite its small size, it handles roughly 500,000 passengers each year. Remarkably, its runway intersects with Winston Churchill Avenue, the main north-south street, requiring movable barricades to close when aircraft land or depart.
When it comes to transportation, Gibraltar International Airport has a variety of car rental companies available immediately on arrival. The car rental desks are conveniently located in the terminal building right next to the arrivals gate. Companies such as Avis, Europcar, and Hertz offer a broad range of vehicles suited to your specific needs.
To navigate the city streets of Gibraltar easily, compact hatchbacks or small SUV's are recommended. However, for those venturing further afield, a larger, more comfortable car could be beneficial. Remember, Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory, so vehicles are right-hand drive.
There are various petrol stations located near the airport and around Gibraltar. The closest being the BP station on Winston Churchill Avenue, which is open 24/7. You also have the option to pre-purchase a full tank of fuel from the rental company.
Despite its size, Gibraltar has much to offer, including the famous Rock of Gibraltar, beautiful beaches, and many historical sites. Being only 6.8 square kilometers in size, everything is within a short drive from the airport.
There are several entry points into Gibraltar by road, with the most common being via Spain. The drive from the Spanish border to Gibraltar city center takes less than 10 minutes. There are also regular bus services connecting the airport with the city center and nearby towns in Spain.
With a Mediterranean climate, you can expect warm summers and mild winters in Gibraltar. It's a great destination any time of the year. Despite being a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar has its own currency - Gibraltar Pound (GIP) although British Pounds (GBP) are also widely accepted.
Located at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar is a gateway to both the United Kingdom and Spain. Nearby cities include La Linea, Algeciras, and Marbella in Spain, all within an hour's drive.
