Fun fact for non-Spanish speaking tourists: The name ‘Lavacolla’ has a quite interesting origin. ‘Lava’ means to wash, and ‘colla’ means hair. So, it translates to ‘wash your hair’. It has been said that in ancient times, pilgrims used to wash themselves in the Lavacolla Stream before entering the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Although a small town, Lavacolla is best explored with a car, especially if you're planning to explore the Galician region further. Renting a car from Santiago Airport is recommended. Compact cars are most suitable for Lavacolla's narrow roads and village style parking.
In Spain, you drive on the right-hand side of the road. The maximum speed limit in Lavacolla, and other towns in Spain, is 50 km/h. Outside built-up areas, the limit usually increases to 90 km/h. Make sure to adhere to speed limits as there are speed cameras scattered around the region.
Parking in Lavacolla mostly entails street parking. Always remember to park in the direction of the traffic flow. Avoid areas with yellow lines as parking there is prohibited.
Lavacolla serves as a great base to explore stunning landscapes and historical artifacts. Not to be missed are the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral and the stunning Praza do Obradoiro square, where pilgrims gather to celebrate their accomplishment.
Galicia's climate can be quite changeable, with a blend of sunny and rainy days. The most pleasant months to visit Lavacolla are May to September, where you can expect a warm, comfortable climate.
Drive towards the coast to visit A Coruña, a vibrant city with a bustling port and lively squares, or head south to Pontevedra, boasting medieval charm and beautiful beaches.
Have a wonderful journey and enjoy the charm and tranquility this quaint Galician town offers.
