Once you land at Sumburgh Airport, your journey in Lerwick begins. The town is about 40 km to the north of the airport, and a rental car provides the most convenient way to explore the area. Car rental services are available at the airport. Selecting a compact or economy class car is recommended as the narrow and winding country roads of Shetland may challenge larger vehicles.

Driving in Lerwick

Remember, in the UK we drive on the left side of the road, and speed limits are in miles per hour. Generally, the limit is 60mph on single-carriageway roads and 70mph on dual carriageways and motorways. However, we recommend driving cautiously, respecting the local speed limits, and being alert for roaming wildlife.

Parking

Parking around Lerwick town center can be a challenge due to its compact size, but there are free public parking spaces available. The largest is at Fort Charlotte, however, it can get full quickly, so we suggest you explore parking options with your accommodation provider as well.

Attractions

Road tripping around the Shetland archipelago is an experience unlike any other. The rugged coastlines, the rich history, and the unspoiled beauty of the landscape are mesmerizing. Places you should not miss include Shetland Museum, Clickimin Broch, Fort Charlotte, and Böd of Gremista.

Exploring the Neighbourhood

Exploring Lerwick's surroundings is a must: You can visit the impressive archaeological site of Jarlshof or the enchanting St Ninian’s Isle. Also, remember to take a ferry trip to Out Skerries or Fair Isle - these islands with their rich wildlife and picturesque sceneries are worth exploring.

Seasonal Highlights

Lerwick celebrates the Up Helly Aa Fire Festival, an unforgettable annual event that takes place in the last Tuesday of January. Complete with a torchlit procession and the burning of a replica Viking galley, it's something you won't want to miss in the winter season!

Local Currency

In Scotland, including Lerwick, the currency is the British Pound (£). You'll find ATMs available throughout the town, and most businesses accept major credit cards. Do keep some cash handy for smaller shops or local markets!

Sit back, book your car, and anticipate a journey filled with uncountable vistas, unwinding roads, and heartwarming local hospitality. Your unforgettable journey in Lerwick awaits you!
