Having a rental car is the best way to explore Nouméa and its surrounds at your own pace. Pick up your hired vehicle at the La Tontouta International Airport or in the city. Remember to drive on the right-hand side of the road and keep an eye on speed limits, which vary between 30 km/h in residential areas, 50 km/h in urban areas, and up to 110 km/h on the expressway.
Consider taking a drive around the island along the Grande Randonnée, a well-marked scenic route. You'll pass through idyllic landscapes and small villages, stopping for a swim in natural pools, visit world-renowned snorkeling spots and enjoy the breathtaking view on the Heart of Voh, a natural heart-shape mangrove formation.
Nouméa experiences a tropical climate with warm to hot weather all year round. The best time to visit is between September and November when the weather is warm and dry.
The official currency is the CFP Franc. Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's good to have some cash for smaller vendors, especially in the local markets.
The city hosts a range of cultural events throughout the year, including the vibrant "Carnaval de Nouméa" in July and the exciting Melanesian arts festival "Foire de Bourail" in August.
