Pakse, the capital and most populous city of the southern Laotian province of Champasak, spans the mighty Mekong and seductive Xe Don Rivers. It's an ideal base for venturing into the Bolaven Plateau, with its coffee plantations, waterfalls and ethnic villages, or exploring the pre-Angkorian ruins of Wat Phu.

As in most parts of Laos, traffic drives on the right side of the road. The general speed limit in the city is 50 km/hour and 80-120 km/hour on the highways. English-based road signage are common in tourist areas, easing the navigation.
Street parking is commonly available, with a few paid parking lots in the city center and shopping areas. Hotels often provide free parking to their guests.
Be sure to try the regional cuisine at local joints along the road. The traditional Lao noodle soup - Khao Piak Sen, and grilled Mekong fish are not to be missed!
The tropical weather means it stays warm year-round. The peak travel seasons are November to March when it's somewhat cooler and dry.
While the official currency is the Lao Kip, US dollars and Thai baht are widely accepted. ATMs are also plentiful in Pakse.
