Located in western Norway, Stord is a charming island municipality full of beautiful landscapes, distinct cultural heritage and cosy communities. It is often referred to as 'Norway in miniature' because its diverse geography resembles the entire country.
Naturally, the best way to explore the island is by car. Stord has an extensive road network, with scenic routes that pass by fjords, mountains, and apple orchards. Expect to navigate tunnels, bridges, and roundabouts - don’t worry, locals are accustomed to tourists and tend to drive courteously.
Considering the terrain, compact or mid-size cars are recommended. These vehicles provide sufficient comfort for the drive and are easier to park in the small island towns. SUVs may be preferred by those planning to visit more secluded areas or during winter when roads can become slippery.
Parking in Stord is mainly free, but note that some spots require a parking disc. Follow the traffic rules such as a general speed limit of 80 km/h on main roads and 30 km/h in residential areas. Be cautious of kids playing and domestic animals crossing the road in rural and residential areas.
The island is home to several cultural and natural attractions, such as the Sunnhordland Museum, the Leirvik fish market, or the Halsnøy Abbey.
For nature lovers, several hiking trails lead to stunning views at Kattnakken, or Mehammarstødn with its famous stone formation, 'The Troll's Tongue'. Opportunities for boating, fishing, and bird-watching are abundant.
Stord experiences a temperate oceanic climate. Winters are mild and wet, while summers are comfortable and partly cloudy. The best time to visit Stord is between June and August when the weather is most pleasant.
The currency in Norway is Norwegian Krone (NOK), and credit cards are widely accepted. Norwegians are proficient in English, so communication shouldn’t be a problem for English-speaking tourists. However, learning a few phrases in Norwegian would undoubtedly enrich your travel experience.
Stord hosts a series of summer festivals and concerts for you to immerse yourself in local culture. Check the events calendar when planning your visit.
So, ready to embark on your Norwegian adventure? Pack your bags, rent a car and prepare to be amazed by the serene beauty of Stord.
