The people of Tartu are known for their innovative mind-set, intellectual curiosity, and a unique sense of community. Locals are friendly, and almost every resident speaks English.
Visit Tartu Observatory, Tartu University Botanical Garden and, Tartu Art Museum. Wander in the old town to discover an array of attractions including Tartu Cathedral, St. John's Church and the 19th century Raekoja plats (the Town Hall Square) dotted with student-friendly cafes and vintage shops.
Tartu, despite being a city full of history, boasts superb roads and easy-to-follow traffic laws. You can cruise around Tartu with ease and comfort. Just remember, Estonia operates strict drink driving laws, and the limit is zero. Speed limit tends to be 50 km/h in built-up areas, and on highways, it usually is 90 km/h. In absolute terms, Tartu is relatively small, and it's easy to navigate by car.
Parking in Tartu is remarkably easy – with large city car parks and street parking readily available. And don't worry about finding a petrol station - you're well served in Tartu and the wider county. Most of them operate self-service and accept card payments.
A compact or economy car will usually do the job for city commutes. If you plan on exploring the countryside or plan family trips to surrounding cities like Tallinn or Pärnu, a comfortable sedan or SUV might be a better option.
