The official language is Mongolian. However, English is increasingly spoken amongst the younger population and in tourist hotspots. The Mongolian Tugrik (MNT) is the accepted currency in Ulan Bator.
Mongolia follows a right-hand driving system. The use of seat belts is mandatory and the legal Blood Alcohol Content limit is 0.02%. The majority of road signs are in Cyrillic so learning the basics can come in handy.
In Ulan Bator, the general speed limit is 60 km/hr. But it's important to pay attention to posted signs as it can vary in different zones.
Ulan Bator has both on-street and off-street parking. Parking fees vary and it's advised to always park in well-lit, designated areas to avoid fines or towing.
Most of the international car hire firms are available at Ulan Bator's Chinggis Khaan International Airport. The options range from compact cars to SUVs. For the rugged roads outside the city, a 4x4 or SUV is the recommended car to hire.
Start with Sukhbaatar Square, the city’s central hub. Check Zaisan Hill’s sweeping views and explore the Gandantegchinlen Monastery to get a feel for Mongolia's spiritual side. For a wider exploration of Mongolia's beautiful landscapes, take a drive to the nearby Gorkhi-Terelj National Park.
Ulan Bator has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The Naadam Festival, a major event showcasing Mongolia’s nomadic culture, takes place in July.
Just a short drive away you will find Terelj National Park and the Manzushir Monastery, both set within the stunning scenery of Mongolia's rugged landscapes. Further afield, the ancient city of Karakorum lies around 360 km west of UB.
