The tree, also known as "Drago", was considered sacred by the Guanches in earlier times: the red resin was said to have healing powers. Because of this, the sap of the dragon tree was also used to make ointments and medicines and was used to mummify the dead. It is reported that on Tenerife there should have been complete forests of dragon trees until the 15th century.
