While West Yellowstone is a compact town, to explore the larger Yellowstone area and its surroundings, a car is highly recommended. With wide-open highways and scenic byways, driving in this part of Montana is part of the experience. Do remember that driving speed limit within the town is 25 mph while it's generally 70 mph on freeways and highways.
Although Yellowstone National Park is the main attraction, it certainly isn't the only one. The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, Yellowstone Giant Screen Theatre, Playmill Theatre and Museum of the Yellowstone are worth visiting. Don't miss the Great Fountain Geyser, which erupts intermittently, offering breathtaking views.
While driving, keep a lookout for wildlife. With common sightings of bisons, elks and even bears, a drive in the park can turn into a mini safari experience!
Enjoy fishing? The Madison and Firehole Rivers are considered a fisherman's paradise. Remember a fishing license is mandatory.
West Yellowstone has a Subarctic climate with a brief warm Summer (July - August) and long chilly winters (November - April). If you're planning to visit the National Park, best time would be from late spring to fall.
