Getting Around

While West Yellowstone is a compact town, to explore the larger Yellowstone area and its surroundings, a car is highly recommended. With wide-open highways and scenic byways, driving in this part of Montana is part of the experience. Do remember that driving speed limit within the town is 25 mph while it's generally 70 mph on freeways and highways.

Car Rental Tips

  • Pick the right car: A compact car is fine for getting around town, but if you plan to explore the National Park, a SUV or a car with good ground clearance could be beneficial.
  • Parking: Parking can get scarce in the peak season. It's best to secure a place with free parking or park in the designated lots.
  • One way rentals: If you're arriving by flight, consider renting your car from Bozeman airport and return it at West Yellowstone airport.

Exploring Attractions

Although Yellowstone National Park is the main attraction, it certainly isn't the only one. The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, Yellowstone Giant Screen Theatre, Playmill Theatre and Museum of the Yellowstone are worth visiting. Don't miss the Great Fountain Geyser, which erupts intermittently, offering breathtaking views.

Local Insights

While driving, keep a lookout for wildlife. With common sightings of bisons, elks and even bears, a drive in the park can turn into a mini safari experience!

Enjoy fishing? The Madison and Firehole Rivers are considered a fisherman's paradise. Remember a fishing license is mandatory.

When to Visit

West Yellowstone has a Subarctic climate with a brief warm Summer (July - August) and long chilly winters (November - April). If you're planning to visit the National Park, best time would be from late spring to fall.

Currency

The official currency is US Dollar (USD). Credit cards are widely accepted but do carry some cash for small vendor transactions and tips.

The People & Culture

The residents of West Yellowstone are typically warm and welcoming. While English is predominantly spoken, being a tourist place, you'll also hear a mix of languages from visiting tourists.

Now that you're ready to hit the road, we wish you a wonderful and exciting trip to West Yellowstone!
